Dragons Explode for 7 Against Canucks

The Drumheller Dragons had a rare weekday home game tonight facing off against the Calgary Canucks. The Dragons and Canucks have only met once this season back in October and Calgary took that one 4 – 2. The Dragons wanted retribution at home and earned it in fine style.

It was kind of a slow start for both teams through the first 10 minutes of the game.  There was not much flow to the game early on. Drumheller earned a power play opportunity with just over 5 minutes left in the first. They capitalized as Alex Rotundo, making his first appearance in a Dragons jersey this season, scored his first of the year from Tyson Scott and Troy Dudley. Drumheller ended the period with a 1 – 0 lead and out shot Calgary 9 – 5.

Calgary tried to battle back early in the second but to no avail. Drumheller added another power play goal when Tyler Kreklewich scored his 9th of the year, with the assist going to Dragons goaltender Dane Dow. The Dragons continued the onslaught as Brayden Nicholetts scored his 7th of the season unassisted. That was it for Canucks goaltender Kolby Matthews as the switch was made to Erik Gordon. That did not stop the goals. Drumheller put another one in with just under 5 minutes left in the second.  Alex Rotundo scored his second of the night and the year on a beautiful set up by Carson Kurylo and Slater Dykema. Drumheller lead 4 – 0 after two.

The Dragons continued in the third as Brett Wieschorster ran the net and somehow pushed the puck across the line with an assist going to Tyson Scott. Calgary got on the board when Josh Giacomin found some room on the right side of the net to negate the shut out bid by Dane Dow. Drumheller didn't stop as they scored their sixth goal at 11:55 when Brett Edwards scored his 14th of the year assisted by Brady Risk. The Dragons added one late with only 1:43 left. Tyler Kreklewich scored his second of the night on another feed from Brady Risk. Final score Drumheller 7 Calgary 1. The Dragons out shot Calgary 30 – 25 in the hockey game.

Drumheller needed that win to gain some momentum for this upcoming weekend up north where they face the North leading Fort McMurray Oil Barons, and then travel to Bonnyville to face the Pontiacs and conclude the weekend in Lloydminster vs. the Bobcats.
