The Drumheller Dragons started the 2015-16 season of with a win. Drumheller hosted the Calgary Canucks for their home opener scoring 2 power play goals and shutting down the Canucks power play for a 5-1 victory. The Dragons showed the home crowd, which came in just shy of 800 what we hope this season will be like.
In the first period the Dragons played a solid game outshooting the Canucks 16-4. Controlling much of the play and a goal by Keaton Holinaty would finish the period of with a 1-0 lead for Drumheller.
Calgary came out stronger in the second period with a few good scoring opportunities but goaltender Jonny Hogue held the zone. Clint Filbrandt and new Dragon Ryan Chynoweth scored ending the period at 3-0.
The third period would show the home crowd the talent of two more new players with Slater Dykema and George King both scoring goals. At 15:18 the Calgary Canucks would finally get on the board with their first and only goal of the game. Final score 5-1 for the Dragons.
Coach Curran,” Home openers are one of the toughest games to play for the home team with such pressure and players wanting to do well. It was good to see our boys come out together as a team in front of a very loud and appreciative crowd.”
