The last time these two teams met, the Dragons destroyed the Canucks. They were hoping to do the same again tonight.
Drumheller and Calgary met on February 6 and Drumheller won 9-1 in Calgary. This one would be a little different.
The first period began with Drumheller dominating with the majority of the play in the Calgary end. The Dragons had some really nice set up plays but could not connect to get any past goaltender Erik Gordon. Both teams had one power play chance but could not capitalize. Drumheller out shot Calgary 19-8 in the period.
The flood gates opened for the Dragons in the second. Markus Boguslavsky opened up the scoring 1:31 into the period when he scored his 17th of the season from Tyson Scott and Tyler Kreklewich. Then on the power play at 7:15, Tyson Scott made it 2-0 Drumheller with an assist to Brady Risk. Then only 21 second later, Kaden Hanas scored his seventh of the year from Derrick Budz and Brett Wieschorster. 31 seconds later, Drumheller made it 4-0 when Carson Kurylo scored his fifth on the season from Jordan Taupert and Dawson Bruneski. The Dragons felt pretty comfortable with the four goal lead but in hindsight shouldn't have. Calgary got on the board at 13:34 when Michael Johnson scored. The Canucks made it 4-2 Dragons with 1:22 left in the second when Chad Varney scored on the power play.
Calgary continued to have success in the third. At 8:48, the Canucks made it 4-3 Dragons when Cooper Johnson scored. Calgary tied it 50 seconds later when Zach Webb scored from Chad Varney and Jordan McConnell. The Canucks took their first lead of the hockey game at 11:02 when Zach Webb scored his second consecutive goal. Drumheller tied it 21 seconds later as Brett Edwards scored his 22nd of the season unassisted. Then on the power play, Brayden Nicholetts would get the game winner from Bradley Stonnell and Jordan Taupert. Calgary pulled their goalie with 1:13 left to go as they had a power play. Even with six on four, they could not get the equalizer. Drumheller out shot Calgary 47-30 in the game but more importantly held on to the 6-5 win.
Two great tidbits from the game. It was Pack The Rink For Charity for the game. For every Dragons goal, participating businesses would donate funds to the Greentree and St. Anthony's School Breakfast Program. It would work out to 1,100 per goal so with six goals in the game, the total raised was 6,600 for both schools. Also, Jordan Taupert continues his point streak to 11 games with two assists in the game tonight getting closer to the all time Dragons point streak record.
