Dragons Sign Goaltender Hunter Virostek for 2016-17

It is with great pride that the Drumheller Dragons announce the signing of goaltender Hunter Virostek from Nanton, AB for the 2016-17 season. Born in 1998 and turning 18 later this year, Virostek comes to the Drumheller Dragons from the Midget AAA CFR Bisons out of Strathmore, where he posted a 2.37 GAA and an impressive .921 save percentage over the span of 19 games.

“Hunter just came off a fantastic year with the CFR Bisons,” said Dragons head coach and GM, Brian Curran. “I was at a couple of his games last year and was very impressed with him. He competes hard yet he is very calm, which is exacly what the coaching and scouting staff was looking for.”

It was the Dragons' dedication and perseverance in recruiting him that eventually won over Virostek. “The Dragons have watched me play more times than any other team by a long shot, and have always been open, honest and very approachable,” said the 6'1, 165-lb goaltender. “Drumheller's ability to not take losing lightly is also a huge factor [in deciding to commit]. Team toughness both mentally and physically is a huge appeal.”

As far as Virostek's role on the team, Curran indicated that he now has two strong goalies (the other being veteran Xavier Burghardt) that will compete hard for the starting role.

Dragons fans can check out Virostek in the Dragons' first home exhibition game vs. Lloydminster on September 9. In fact, Virostek encourages it. “[Community support] makes a player feel at home and it makes the game more fun knowing people are excited to come see the team play,” he said.
