Dragons Split Home Weekend – Coach Curran’s Recap

Written by Coach Curran

The Drumheller Dragons hosted the Olds Grizzlys and the Calgary Canucks this past weekend, splitting the games.

OLDS

The Dragons played a strong game against Olds on Friday night in front of a very supportive crowd, beating the Grizzlys 4-1 on goals by Jeff Fasegha, Brady Risk, Brett Campbell and Tyler Kreklewich. We are trying to move up in the standings heading into the last bit of the season and the Grizzlys are trying to catch us, but it was the Dragons who skated away with the victory in a very entertaining game where both teams had their chances.

After our loss vs. the Mustangs last week it was good to see the boys bounce back with a very strong team effort. Other than our powerplay, which has been sliding as of late, the team played hard and together for the full 60 minutes. We need to carry this forward to our next game.

CALGARY CANUCKS

The Dragons have had their issues with the Canucks this season, losing their last three against them. Other than the first game, the Canucks have just been too strong. Although the Canucks would take Sunday's game 4-2, we still had a solid effort by all our players. Goal scorers for the Dragons were Chad Hurtubise and newcomer Jordan Evans.

I thought the boys played hard this game but the Canucks have a very good team with strong goaltending, good defence and four good lines. They are certainly a tough team to play and it is always a great challenge for us. We made several key mistakes positionally and against a team like that they are going to make you pay. They're a veteran team and I think they have all the pieces to go a long way. As long as I see the progress going forward with our team and that kind of effort on a game-to-game basis I know we will be fine. We need to find that little more edge in each of our players, which will make a big difference down the road for our team and will help us in the playoffs.
