Dragons Win Wild One in Overtime – Coach Curran’s Recap

Written by Coach Curran

The Drumheller Dragons needed to get back on track after the previous weekend, and it was not going to be easy as we hosted the Canmore Eagles on Saturday night at the Memorial Arena.

The Dragons got off to a good start as Brett Campbell gave us the early lead. However, the Eagles answered back with two goals of their own to end the first period leading 2-1.

The Eagles extended their lead into the second period by two goals, but we fought back on goals by Andrew Kartusch and Brett Campbell, who scored his second of the night. The games was tied 3-3 with only a few minutes left, but the Eagles went ahead to end the period with a one goal lead.

The Dragons came came out strong in the third and Bradley Stonnell and Joren Patenaude would both light the lamp and give the Dragons their first lead of the game. The Eagles, however, bounced right back and tied the game 5-5 before the period expired, sending the game into overtime.

Three minutes into the back-and-forth overtime period, Evan Tschumi scored to give the Dragons the 6-5 win.

Newcomer Tyler Krelewich, who the Dragons acquired in a trade with the Melville Millionaires of the SJHL, had a big night and proved to be a very welcome addition to the team.

I was proud of the boys after going down 3-1 and showing that they had a lot of fight coming back against a strong team. I know 5 goals doesn't say much about our defense but I thought we did a better job defensively than the score showed. It also proves to the boys that the simplest of mistakes can cost you and we gave them some really easy goals just by lack of communication. But in the end, we fought back and the players stood together and got the win.
