The Drumheller Dragons opened up the home portion of the 2018 season tonight as they hosted the Canmore Eagles.
The last time these two teams met was in Canmore the last game before Christmas. It was a game Drumheller wanted to forget as they lost 6-4. Drumheller lead in the season series 3 games to 1 going into tonight's game.
Drumheller started the first period with some good pressure on Canmore. Canmore pushed back and it was a fairly even period. With 4:44 remaining, the Dragons got on the board when Brady Risk scored his 3rd of the year from Brett Edwards to make it 1-0 Drumheller. Canmore out shot Drumheller 9-5 in the period
.
The second period was an uneventful period. Neither team could get any sustained pressure in the offensive zone. Both Canmore and Drumheller had power play opportunities but could not score. The period ended with Drumheller still leading 1-0 but Canmore lead in shots 15-8.
There must have been some discussion in the Dragons dressing room as Drumheller came out flying in the third. The Dragons had great pressure in the Eagles zone and peppered the Canmore goaltender, Thomas Davis. Drumheller added to their lead on the power play at 12:29 when Slater Dykema scored his 2nd of the season from affiliate player Hunter Nelson and Brayden Nicholetts. That was all she wrote as they say as Dragons goaltender Hunter Virostek stopped all 18 shots he faced in the game to get the shutout. Drumheller out shot Canmore 21-3 in the period and in the game 29-18.
