Dragons Power Play Comes Alive in 3-2 Victory ? Coach Curran?s Recap

Written by Coach Curran

On Tuesday the Drumheller Dragons hosted the Olds Grizzlys, who beat us 6-2 at home just 10 days ago. But last night, our powerplay was back on track after struggling lately, and we won 3-2 over the Grizzlys with all goals coming on the powerplay.

The game was very exciting to watch as both teams had several great scoring chances with both goalies playing at the top of their game.

In the first period it was Hunter Virostek who made several key saves and the Dragons lead 1-0 going into the first intermission on a powerplay goal by Jordan Taupert.

In the second period it was the Grizzlys goaltender who kept their team in the game. We got our second powerplay goal by defenseman Bradley Stonnell, but our momentum was interrupted and Olds scored to send us into the second intermission leading 2-1.

In the third period, both goalies once again were at their best and it was easy to tell this game would be down to the wire. Andrew Kartusch gave the Dragons a 3-1 lead on the powerplay, but with 4 minutes left in the game the Grizzlys pushed back and scored to bring our lead to one again. We played some of our best defense after that, however, and managed to hang onto the lead for the win.

I thought that both teams played well and especially both goalies. It was great to see the powerplay get on track as it has not helped us much this season despite our hard work at it. Olds had the better of the chances in the first period and Virostek played great keeping the lead for us. In the second, the Grizzlys goalie did his job holding us to only 2 goals and in the third period again they both played well. I can’t speak for Olds but I thought both teams played well and it was a very entertaining game. We needed the boys to play as a team and they did.
