DRUMHELLER, AB-The Drumheller Dragons split their games in the 2019/20 AJHL opening weekend. The Dragons kickstarted the week with the annual ?Season Ticket BBQ? at the team clubhouse on Wednesday evening. Season ticket holders were able to enjoy a A&W burger, beverage, and meet the Dragons. The beautiful evening was the perfect backdrop to kickstarting the year with the always dedicated fan base.
Friday night?s season opener, presented by TELUS, was opened up with the annual tailgate party at the Memorial Arena. The sun was shining down as the Drumheller Sea Cadets grilled up burgers and hot dogs for the fans. All the kids were able to enjoy some street hockey with members of the Dragons prior to puck drop as well!
Inside the Memorial Arena, 1257 fans jammed in to watch one of the biggest rivalries in the AJHL, as the Dragons hosted the defending AJHL & National Champion Brooks Bandits. It was a fast-paced contest, but the Dragons would fall to the Bandits 3-1 after the final buzzer. Shane Ott would get the Dragons lone goal at the 18:33 mark of the 3rd period.
It was ?Free Sunglasses Night? on Saturday, as the first 250 fans received their new shades for the Dragons vs. Okotoks Oilers game. It was a good thing they had them, as the goal lights would come on 13 times in the contest. A quick 3 goal rally in the 2nd period by the Dragons helped take them to the eventual 7-6 victory over the Oilers. Dragons would see multi-point nights from Hanas (2G-1A) Heindel (2A) Martin (1G-1A) Risk (1G-1A) Hilman (2G) Akl (2A).
The Dragons will be on the road this coming weekend with visits to Brooks and Olds. You can catch both games on Real Country 910am or click our ?Listen Live? link on the Dragons website.
